Missoku is a unique breathing method that has been practiced by Japanese for a long time and is still practiced today in the fields of traditional arts and martial arts. The most characteristic feature of Missoku is the posture when exhaling, in which the breath is exhaled with the belly stretched out. This is different from the commonly practiced abdominal or chest breathing, as well as from the reverse compound breathing practiced in yoga and other forms of breathing. Japanese people have naturally practiced Missoku in their natural environment and living conditions.
Simply speaking, Missoku is a deep breathing technique in which one assumes a hunched posture (with the pelvis tilted back), the belly is kept slightly protruding during inhalation and exhalation, and no force is applied anywhere, without moving the body. By using the deep muscles instead of the outer muscles and by moving only the diaphragm up and down, this breathing method allows for a large amount of exhalation and inhalation at one time, allowing the body to remain stable and quiet, and the mind to focus and feel free and liberated at the same time.
The reason why Japanese people have come to learn this unique breathing method is thought to be related to the unique natural, working, and living conditions in Japan. Japan is mountainous, with steep slopes, soft soil and abundant vegetation, which combined to make it difficult to stand without lowering the waist and bending the knees. In addition, in paddy field work of rice cultivation, there was constant foot and leg stooping, and the hips and upper body had to move in unison. For this reason, the pelvis was tilted backward, and by working in this posture, the legs and hips were trained to be strong. In addition to that, the daily living environment of the floor (tatami) culture, in which sitting and standing postures were commonplace, and the natural posture wearing the kimono obi, which is tied around the hip bones and secures the lower abdomen, also contributed to the development of the unique posture and physicality of the Japanese people. This posture is the basis for Missoku. Once this posture has been established and one has learned this breathing method, it can be maintained and strengthened in the daily environment. Over the centuries, a way of life made possible by strong muscular strength was slowly perfected.
Thus, due to the unique climate and lifestyle, the Japanese have acquired a body with a lowered center of gravity and an excellent sense of center. This breathing method, which is always performed by a posture with the pelvis tilted back and the strength of the legs, hips and abdomen, has cultivated a sensitivity to perceive oneself and one's surroundings in a state of "serenity”. In this tranquil world, the spirit is calmed and the senses are sharpened to the point of acuity, allowing one to perceive even the smallest changes. This Japanese posture and the senses produced by the astonishing stillness of Missoku were reflected in the unique culture of Japan.
