Split-BrainTheory: Two-in-One
¡ÈSplit-brain¡É studies at the California Institute of Technology during the 50'sand 60's opened up a whole new field of brain research. Under the direction ofRoger Sperry, a Cal Tech group conducted research on patients whose epilepticseizures had been controlled by an operation which severed the corpus callosumand related cummissures. This procedure isolated one cerebral hemisphere from the other by severingthe communication pathways between them.
Major results of the research indicated a hemispheric specialization. Each hemisphere of the brain apparently employsdifferent modes of processing information. It is possible that this specialization ofbrain function is being emulated by a person's eye-scanning movements when he is thinking and calling upon different portions of the brain information.
The following list of words from J.E. Bogen indicates parallel ways of ¡Èknowing¡É. The drawing represents the two hemispheres of the in and the bilateral crossover which is most obvious as ¡Èhandedness¡É. Aright-handed person has a dominant left-hemisphere; a left- handed person has adominant right-hemi- sphere.
