Isomorphic metaphor:
an isomorphism, a borrowing from set theory and mapping functions, is a one-to-one mapping between two sets of objects such that the relationships between the elements, e1 and e2, are preserved in the mapping by the counterparts in the second set of the elements. Thus e1 and e2 have the same relationship, R; a relationship that is mirrored by the counterparts of the seoriginal elements in the second set.

Now, in practical terms, the two sets of objects are the actual present stateof the client and the metaphoric space onto which the elements of the presentstate are mapped. As required by the definition of isomorphism, the metaphoric space will contain the counterparts of the elements of the present state andthose counterpart elements will have the same relationships in the metaphoric space as the original elements had in the present state of the client

As a crude and oversimplified example - suppose that your client is a mother of a teenage daughter who is struggling to (appropriately) achieve independence ofher mother. Further, the mother, with the best of intentions (to protect herdaughter) is imposing so many restrictions on her daughter that she (the daughter) is unable to have precisely the set of experiences that will allowher to achieve her independence Notice that we could select as one appropriate metaphoric space the practice of horticulture (growing things).

Further, we might represent (in the one-to-one mapping) the mother as the gardener and the daughter as a rose bush. If the gardener, with the best of intention (to have the rose bush grow into a beautiful, resilient and aromic source of roses) were so concerned about the rose bush that she would trim allnew growth (including buds) off the rose bush, the over management of the rosebush (the excessive pruning) would in fact, prevent the rose bush from achieving maturity and b...ecoming the strong resilient source of beautiful roses-the opposite of the intention of the gardener (and the mother that thegardener represents). Notice is this simple example that there is a one-to-one mapping

¡¡¡¡¡¡mother = gardener¡¡¡¡¡¡daughter= rose bush

Further, the relationship between the gardener and the rose bush is the same as the relationship between the mother and the daughter. In this form (isomorphism)the one-to-one mapping will adequately distract or confuse the conscious mindof the client while preserving the relationship will allow the unconscious ofthe client to easily appreciate which metaphor object (the rose bush, the gardener) stands for or represents the characters in the actual presenting problem (the conflict between the mother and the daughter

Naturalistic metaphor:
a precise way of composing a series of small, short metaphors (typical ofbusiness application) and very powerful in the change process. This form takesadvantage of the fact that the unconscious is full of predicates (verbs, adverbs and adjectives). The relationship between the present state of thesituation that the client wishes to change is compared with the desired state -what the client wants, the situation to occur. The message is contained in aseries of compact metaphors that are presented over some period as if unrelated(from a conscious point of view). However, these distinct presentations areconnected by unconscious marking so that the unconscious recognized that theyare connected and indeed are carrying the same message.

Quotes: this is perhaps the simplest of all forms of metaphor. The title "quotes" refers to the fact that the message to be presented to the client is attributed to some character within the story and thereby is presented as part of a dialogue within the story. The message presented is consciously understood by the listener/reader as something that is said by one of the characters inside ofthe story while, in fact, the method of delivery will make it clear to the unconscious of the client that the intended recipient is, in fact, the client who you are presenting the story to.

Metaphors and Butterflies

The use of metaphors and associated forms such as similes, analogies, parables etc have served our species since before written records and reach bach intopre-historic times. We, as a species, are composed to respond well to stories in all their various technical forms. There are entire cultures whose continued integrity rests on the ability of their members to remember and recount extended stories of creation, stories that give significance to the rituals, the perceptions, and the practices of everyday life.

Metaphors can also serve very powerful and precise requirements in communications. A metaphor allows the presenting party (the person telling the story) to offer but a single story to multiple people simultaneously - a story which gives to these people, each with a different purpose, each with a different need to understand something of importance, the opportunity to participate (primarily unconsciously) in carefully listening to (or reading) the metaphor and then to select from a large number of equally legitimate interpretations only the interpretation that will facilitate accomplishing the task or meeting successfully the challenge that they find themselves faced with. This is remarkable - a single story can have such distinct meanings (interpretations) to different people.

In the special context of change work - where agentsof change such as professional counselors, therapists, psychiatrists, coaches etc accept the responsibility to facilitate transitions in the lifes of theirclients - metaphors play an elegant and very effective role. Please note thatone of the special challenges confronted by a professional agent of change isto engage the client effectively and create a context in which that client canfind the choices to move forward in their lives. And they are to do all thiswithout imposing their own perceptions, values, beliefs etc on the client. If the integrity and independence of the client is to be fully respected, how canthe agent of change communicate effectively and still avoid impositions of content. One brilliant form that is available to accomplish this complex task is metaphor.
