メタファーという言葉について

◎metaphor の語源と意味
英語の metaphor(メタファー)という言葉は、ギリシャ語の metapherein という語に由来しています。この言葉には、もともと〈変形させる〉や〈移転させる〉という意味がありました(参考:ジーニアス英和大辞典および Oxford Dictionary of English)。語の形成としては、〈・・・を超えて〉や〈変化〉などの意味をもつ meta- という接頭辞と、〈運ぶ〉という意味をもつ -phor という語幹からなる単語です。これを合わせると、メタファーの語源的意味は〈・・・を超えて〜を運ぶ〉というものになります。ことばを補って説明するならば、〈一つの表現と別の表現との間の境界線を超えて意味を運ぶ〉と考えることができそうです。要するに、「一つの表現が、もともと持っていた本来の意味を超えて、別の意味をあらわすようになる」のがメタファーの本質ということになります。

◎metaphor の辞書的意味
〈表現同士の境界線を超えて意味を運ぶ〉という語源的意味を持つ metaphor は、現代英語においておもに以下の二つの意味で用いられています。一つは修辞学の専門用語としての厳密な意味、二つ目は一般的な文脈でも用いられるより広い意味となっています(参考:ランダムハウス英和大辞典)。

(1)〔修辞学の用語〕隠喩(いんゆ)あるいは暗喩(あんゆ):比喩の一種で、like, as(・・・のような)などを用いず、A is B のように、Bの属性を直接Aに移して叙述するような表現技法のこと。例としては、Life is a journey「人生は旅だ」などが挙げられる。

(2)比喩、比喩的表現。抽象的なものを象徴する具体的なもの。例)flower as a metaphor for beauty「美の隠喩としての花」

エクササイズ「メタファーの開発と伝達のバリエーション」

【エクササイズ1】
1日目に提示された3つのタイプのメタファー作成能力を開発するエクササイズ。(無意識の特別な性質、言語形式と、クライアントの無意識に対するそれらの異なるインパクト)

 メタファーの構成、創作のための3つのモデル
 ー引用
 ー自然形のメタファー
 ー同一構造のメタファー


【エクササイズ2】
メタファー伝達のバリエーションを学びましょう。つまり具体的にどのようにしたら、すばらしいメタファーを作った参加者が、そのメタファーによって影響を与えたい相手に対して、確実に効果的な伝達ができるか、ということを学びます。

考慮される伝達のバリエーションには、以下のようなものがあります:
 ークライアントの呼吸に合わせて、メタファーの伝達をマーキングする
 ーメタファーをより受け入れやすくするために、リプレゼンテーショナルシステムを用いる
 ー伝達のスピードを3分の1ほど遅くしてみる
 ーリズムを変える
 ー妨害を加える(騒音、姿勢を変えるなど)
 ー否認するもの( 疑いを除いたり混乱を招くためにストーリーに含めるもの)
 ー前提

このバリエーションはひとつずつ提示され、デモンストレーションされ、時間の許す限り、参加者がこうしたスキルを使えるようになるためのエクササイズが与えられる予定です。

昨年の、カルメン・ボスティック・サンクレアとジョン・グリンダーの大講演会に参加された方は理解されたであろうと思いますが、カルメンとジョンはセミナーでプレゼンテーションする内容を、セミナーの参加者の反応によって常に変更、調整し続けます。そうすることで、彼らは参加者の特定のニーズや希望にこたえることができるのです。参加者がメタファーを作り、提示するために、また彼らの個人的な深いメタファーを発見し、洗練するために、必要なテーマやパターンがカルメンとジョンによって明らかになったら、それからのテーマやパターンが追加されることでしょう。

the special characteristics of the unconscious and the forms of language and their different impact on the unconscious of the client.

 Three models for the composition/creation of metaphors

  Ouotes 
  Naturalistic metaphors 
  Isomorphic metaphors


The beginning of the consideration of the delivery variables- that is, how specifically can the participant who has composed an elegant metaphor ensure that this metaphor is presented effectively to the person who they wish to influence by metaphor. Among the delivery variables to be considered, we have the following:

 −marking the presentation of the metaphor in coordination with the client's breathing

 −use of representational systems to facilitate acceptance of the metaphor

 −speed of presentation reduced by 1/3

 −shifting rhythms

 −incorporation of any disturbances (noises, shift of posture etc)

 −disclaimers - things that you include in the story to remove suspicion or confuse the client

 −presuppositions

Each of these variables will be presented, demonstrated and as time permits, exercises will be given to promote the transfer of these skills to the participants.

As those of you who attended last years Big Lecture by Carmen Bostic St. Clair and John Grinder likely have worked out, Carmen and John continuously modify and adjust their presentation to the responses of the participants in the seminar. By doing this, they can respond to the specific needs and desires of the participants. There will be additional themes and patterns offered as John and Carmen become aware of what the participants require to learn to compose and present metaphors and to detect and refine their own personal deep metaphors

エクササイズ「深いメタファー」

深いメタファーとは、私たちがそれによって、物の見方や人生の経験の解釈の仕方を作り上げる、アナロジー(類比)のことです。人生そのものも、しばしば隠喩的に表されます。

次に挙げる、詩人エミリー・ディキンソンの作品からの二つの引用について考えてみてください。


  私は死のために止まれなかったので、死が親切に私のために止まってくれた。
  馬車には、私たちと不滅だけが乗っていた。

  死ぬことは、荒れ狂う夜であり、新しい道である。


これらの引用は、明らかにショーレム・アレイヘムの引用とは対照的です。(ショーレム・アレイヘム:ウクライナ生まれの劇作家、小説家、ジャーナリスト。「屋根の上のバイオリン弾き」は、ショーレム・アレイヘム短篇『牛乳屋テヴィエ』を原作としている。

  人生は、賢い者にとっては夢であり、愚かな者にとってはゲームであり、
  金持ちにとっては喜劇であり、貧しい者にとっては悲劇である。


また、ウィリアム・シェイクスピアにより複数のメタファーで表されています。

  明日、また明日、また明日と、
  時は小きざみな足どりで一日一日を歩み、
  ついには歴史の最後の一瞬にたどりつく、
  昨日という日はすべて愚かな人間が塵と化す死への道を照らしてきた。
  消えろ、消えろ、つかの間の燈火!

また、日本の固山一鞏(こざんいっきょう)によると、

また、鴨長明の随筆も、メタファーで構成されています。

ゆく河の流れは絶えずして、しかももとの水にあらず。よどみに浮かぶうたかたは、かつ消え、かつ結びて、久しくとどまりたるためしなし。世の中にある人とすみかと、またかくのごとし。

現代語訳)
流れ過ぎていく河の流れは途絶えることがなく、それでいて(そこを流れる水は)もとのもとの水ではない。淀みに浮かんでいる水の泡は、一方では消えてなくなり、一方ではできたりして、いつも同じ形でいることはない。この世に生きている人と、その人たちが住む場所とは、またこの河の流れと泡のようである。


自分の人生をそれに従って生きている深いメタファーを特定し、その適切さと、それがもたらす結果について考えてみられるような体験とエクササイズを行います。これらのエクササイズと体験の意図するところは、自分の人生におけるこのような影響の存在に気づき、それらの深いメタファーが自分の役に立っているか否かを決められるためにするものです。

During this 1st afternoon, we will present some exercises and experiences to assist the participants to identify and consider the appropriateness and specific consequences of some of the deep metaphors that they live their life by. The intention of these exercises and experiences is to bring to awareness in the participants the existence of these influences in their lives so that they may decide whether these deep metaphors are serving them well or not.

メタファーの形式である「同一構造」について

同一構造のメタファー: 集合論とマッピング関数から借りた同一構造とは、二つの集合の中の対象が、一対一のマッピングをしており、一つの集合の要素1と要素2の関係性が、もう一つの集合の要素1と要素2の関係性にも鏡のように対応しているものです。

実際的な言葉でいうと、対象の二つの集合というのは、クライアントの実際の現状と、そのクライアントの現状がマッピングされた比喩的な場ということになります。同一構造の定義にのっとり、比喩的な場にはクライアントの現状にある要素と鏡のように対応する要素があり、それらは、クライアントの現状にある要素が持つ関係性と同じ関係性を持つことになります。

大まかで、単純化された例をあげると、あなたのクライアントが10代の娘を持つ母親だとしましょう。その娘は、適切なことですが、母親から自立しようともがいています。母親は、娘を守るためによかれと思って、あまりにも多くの制限を娘に課しているので、娘は自立するために必要な体験ができないでいます。ここで私たちは、一つの適切な比喩の場として、園芸の実践という場を選択できることに気づいて下さい。

さらに、私たちは、1対1のマッピング方式で、母親を園芸家、娘をバラの低木の株に対応させて表すことができます。もし園芸家が、そのバラの株が美しくはつらつとした、かぐわしいバラの花を咲かせる株に成長して欲しいと思い、株のことを心配するあまり、新しく成長した部分(つぼみを含めて)をすべて摘み取ってしまったら、その過剰な管理(過剰な摘み取り)が、実は、その株が成熟し、強くはつらつとした花を咲かせる源になることを妨げてしまいます。園芸家(そして園芸家が表す母親)の意図とは逆のことが起こるのです。この単純な例の中には、1対1のマッピングがあることのい気づいてください。

   母親=園芸家   娘=バラの株

さらに、園芸家とバラの株の関係性は、母親と娘の関係性と同じです。この形式(同一構造)においては、1対1のマッピングが、適切にクライアントの意識的なマインドの気をそらせ、混乱させますが、一方で、関係性を同じ構造に保っているため、クライアントの無意識は簡単にメタファーの中の物(バラの株、園芸家)が現状に表れている問題(母と娘の葛藤)の中の登場人物を表していると理解できるのです。

Isomorphic metaphor: an isomorphism, a borrowing from set theory and mapping functions, is a one-to-one mapping between two sets of objects such that the relationships between the elements, e1 and e2, are preserved in the mapping by the counterparts in the second set of the elements. Thus e1 and e2 have the same relationship, R; a relationship that is mirrored by the counterparts of the seoriginal elements in the second set.

Now, in practical terms, the two sets of objects are the actual present stateof the client and the metaphoric space onto which the elements of the presentstate are mapped. As required by the definition of isomorphism, the metaphoric space will contain the counterparts of the elements of the present state andthose counterpart elements will have the same relationships in the metaphoric space as the original elements had in the present state of the client

As a crude and oversimplified example - suppose that your client is a mother of a teenage daughter who is struggling to (appropriately) achieve independence ofher mother. Further, the mother, with the best of intentions (to protect herdaughter) is imposing so many restrictions on her daughter that she (the daughter) is unable to have precisely the set of experiences that will allowher to achieve her independence Notice that we could select as one appropriate metaphoric space the practice of horticulture (growing things).

Further, we might represent (in the one-to-one mapping) the mother as the gardener and the daughter as a rose bush. If the gardener, with the best of intention (to have the rose bush grow into a beautiful, resilient and aromic source of roses) were so concerned about the rose bush that she would trim allnew growth (including buds) off the rose bush, the over management of the rosebush (the excessive pruning) would in fact, prevent the rose bush from achieving maturity and b...ecoming the strong resilient source of beautiful roses-the opposite of the intention of the gardener (and the mother that thegardener represents). Notice is this simple example that there is a one-to-one mapping

   mother = gardener   daughter= rose bush

Further, the relationship between the gardener and the rose bush is the same as the relationship between the mother and the daughter. In this form (isomorphism)the one-to-one mapping will adequately distract or confuse the conscious mindof the client while preserving the relationship will allow the unconscious ofthe client to easily appreciate which metaphor object (the rose bush, the gardener) stands for or represents the characters in the actual presenting problem (the conflict between the mother and the daughter

自然形のメタファー: 一連の小さく短いメタファー(典型的にはビジネスに適用する)を作成する正確な方法。変化のプロセスにおいて、とてもパワフルです。この形は、無意識にはたくさんの述語(動詞、副詞、形容詞)が入っているという事実を有効利用します。クライアントが変化させたいと願っている今現在の状況は、クライアントが望む状態(望むもの、起こって欲しいと思っている状況など)と比べられます。メッセージは、ある期間にわたって提示される複数のコンパクトなメタファーに込められています。それらは(意識的な観点からすると)互いにまったく無関係であるかのように提示されます。しかし、これらの異なるメタファーの提示は、無意識のマーキングによってつなげられているため、無意識はそれらがつながっていること、それらが同じメッセージを持っていることに気づくのです。

Naturalistic metaphor: a precise way of composing a series of small, short metaphors (typical ofbusiness application) and very powerful in the change process. This form takesadvantage of the fact that the unconscious is full of predicates (verbs,adverbs and adjectives). The relationship between the present state of thesituation that the client wishes to change is compared with the desired state -what the client wants, the situation to occur. The message is contained in aseries of compact metaphors that are presented over some period as if unrelated(from a conscious point of view). However, these distinct presentations areconnected by unconscious marking so that the unconscious recognized that theyare connected and indeed are carrying the same message.

引用: これはおそらく、メタファーの全ての形式の中でもっともシンプルなものでしょう。「引用」というタイトルは、クライアントに提示するメッセージが、物語の中の登場人物に帰するものであり、その結果、物語の中の会話の一部として提示されるという事実を示しています。提示されたメッセージは、聞き手や読み手に、物語の中で登場人物の一人が言ったこととして、意識的には理解されます。しかしその一方で、この伝達の仕方は、クライアントの無意識に、この物語を聞いているクライアントこそが、メッセージの意図された受け取り手なのだと明確に伝えるのです。

 this is perhaps the simplest of all forms of metaphor. The title "quotes" refers to the fact that the message to be presented to the client is attributed to some character within the story and thereby is presented as part of a dialogue within the story. The message presented is consciously understood by the listener/reader as something that is said by one of the characters inside ofthe story while, in fact, the method of delivery will make it clear to the unconscious of the client that the intended recipient is, in fact, the client who you are presenting the story to.

メタファーについて

メタファー(隠喩、暗喩)と、その仲間ともいえる形、例えばシミリー(直喩、明喩)、アナロジー(類比)、たとえ話、寓話などといったものは、言語による記録が行われる以前、有史前から人類によって使われてきました。私たち人類は、一つの種として、あらゆる技巧的な形式のストーリー(物語)によく反応するように作られています。ある文化に属する人々の、長い物語を記憶し、物語る能力によって、尊厳を保ち続けている文化も多々あります。それらの物語は、創造の物語や儀式、人々のものの見方、日常生活における慣習に意義を与えるものだったりします。

メタファーはまた、コミュニケーションにおいて、非常にパワフルかつ正確に、必要なことを行ってくれます。メタファーを使うと、物語の語り手は、一つの話を同時にたくさんの人に伝えることができます。そのたった一つの物語は、それぞれ違った目的を持ち、何か大切なことを理解する必要がある人たちに、主に無意識的にメタファーを注意深く聞く(あるいは読む)機会を与えます。その後人々は、たくさんのどれも正当な解釈の中から、その人が課題を達成する助けとなる、あるいは直面しているチャレンジに立ち向かう助けとなる解釈のみを選択します。これは驚くべきことです。たった一つの物語が、異なった人々に向けて、異なった意味(解釈)を持ち得るのです。

変化を起こすワークを行うという特別な環境において、(そこでは変化を起こさせる人であるプロのカウンセラー、セラピスト、精神科医、コーチなどが、クライアントの人生における変化を促進する責任を担うのですが)、メタファーは見事で素晴らしく効果的な役割を果たします。プロの変化の仲介者が直面する特別な挑戦の一つは、クライアントを効果的に引き込むこと、そしてクライアントが自分の人生において前進するための選択肢を見つけられるコンテキストを作り出すことだと心に留めておいてください。そして、変化の仲介者は、自分のものの見方や価値観、信念などをクライアントに押し付けることなく、そうしたことすべてを成し遂げるべきです。クライアントの尊厳と自立が完全に尊重されるべきだとしたら、変化の仲介者はどのように効果的にコミュニケーションを行い、かつ内容の押しつけを避けることができるのでしょうか。この複雑なタスクを達成するのに利用できる素晴らしい方法がメタファーです。(ワークショップ「メタファーとバタフライ〜物語の魔法を学ぶ」テキストより)

Metaphors and Butterflies

The use of metaphors and associated forms such as similes, analogies, parables etc have served our species since before written records and reach bach intopre-historic times. We, as a species, are composed to respond well to stories in all their various technical forms. There are entire cultures whose continued integrity rests on the ability of their members to remember and recount extended stories of creation, stories that give significance to the rituals, the perceptions, and the practices of everyday life.

Metaphors can also serve very powerful and precise requirements in communications. A metaphor allows the presenting party (the person telling the story) to offer but a single story to multiple people simultaneously - a story which gives to these people, each with a different purpose, each with a different need to understand something of importance, the opportunity to participate (primarily unconsciously) in carefully listening to (or reading) the metaphor and then to select from a large number of equally legitimate interpretations only the interpretation that will facilitate accomplishing the task or meeting successfully the challenge that they find themselves faced with. This is remarkable - a single story can have such distinct meanings (interpretations) to different people.

In the special context of change work - where agentsof change such as professional counselors, therapists, psychiatrists, coaches etc accept the responsibility to facilitate transitions in the lifes of theirclients - metaphors play an elegant and very effective role. Please note thatone of the special challenges confronted by a professional agent of change isto engage the client effectively and create a context in which that client canfind the choices to move forward in their lives. And they are to do all thiswithout imposing their own perceptions, values, beliefs etc on the client. If the integrity and independence of the client is to be fully respected, how canthe agent of change communicate effectively and still avoid impositions of content. One brilliant form that is available to accomplish this complex task is metaphor.

メタファーについて

一般的に、コミュニケーションやプレゼンテーションの達人といわれている人は、メタファー(比喩)を効果的に使用しています。

メタファーが織り込まれたメッセージは、左脳(意識的なマインド)をバイパスして、右脳(無意識的なマインド)に働きかけますので、自分が伝えたいと思っているメッセージが、意識的な抵抗や疑いに遭うことなく、ダイレクトに相手のマインドに届きます。

私たちは子どもの頃からたくさんの物語に触れてきました。例えば、「アリとキリギリス」ではコツコツと働くことのメリットを学びました。「ピノキオ」ではウソをつくと鼻が伸びる(=罰があたる)ということを学びました。このような教訓といったものは、言葉で言われるよりも物語で語られる方が聞き手にとっては深く心に残ります。

メタファーを使ったアプローチは、無意識レベルでの問題解決に大変有効で、クライアントに深い気づきを促し大きな変化をもたらします。

メタファーを使ったメッセージは、意識的な部分(おもに左脳)を迂回し、無意識的な部分(おもに右脳)に直接訴えかけるため、相手に対して意識的な抵抗や疑いにあうことなくダイレクトにメッセージが伝わります。
