John:
"Outlawed" Marne uses exactly the right word. In a traditional culture the internal representations that I carry to guide my behavior are constantly mirrored and echoed by the structure of the culture that I'm living in. That is not true in your everyday life.

Judy:
But how do we do it? Law!

John:
Legislative maneuvers and law are the faint reflection and the distant echo of coherent culture. And you can grade cultures on their coherency by noticing what forms they use to bring deviant behavior back into line. In a coherent culture, ridicule, laughter, and scorn typically handle most of' the situations that occur. Why? Why do they work there but not here? Because if we are members of a coherent culture, I know that the internal representations of the other members of the tribe match my representations and the cultural practices are structured so that there's a constant cycle of reinforcement of those values. And I can count on them being there as sure as he's a member of my culture.
Therefore I only have to behave with laughter, ridicule, et cetera in such a way as to access in him the very representations which will cause him now to change his behavior, to bring it back into alignment within the range which is acceptable in our culture. And insofar as force, police, military, and legislative work are required to contain deviant behavior there is no internal culture which is matched by external forms. And you have a measure of loss of coherency in the social system.

Emotions

The kinesthetic representational system includes several important distinctions. Sensory inputs from the body are classed as somatic sensetions. These include the exteroceptive sensations of temperature, touch, and pain; proprioceptive sensations from deeper in our muscles, tendons, and joints which keep us informed as to body position, vibrations, and deep pain and pressure; and visceral sensations of pain and fullness from internal organs.

In our language, however, we have identified another kind of ¡Èfeelings,¡É those we call emotions. When someone says, ¡ÈI was hurt,¡É he may be talking about pressure or pain on his skin, or he may be talking about some ¡Èinternal state¡É called an emotion.

Actually, the two meanings are very similar. To be ¡Èhurt¡É emotionally is a composite of several somatic sensations. For example, there may be a tightening around the eyes and face, changes in posture, stresses on deep muscle tissue, tendons, and joints, and often accompanying input from the viscera in the from of tightening or contractions. This sensory input is combined with other thought processes and is then labeled as emotional ¡Èhurt.¡É Because of this close link with somatic sensations, it is useful to consider that those feelings we call emotions are actually derived feelings, or, in the formal notation: £Ëd.

We found, first of all, that most people have a mosthighly valued representational system, one that they use more than other toorganize their experience, and that this most highly valued system can be identifiedquickly by listening to the predicates (adjectives, adverbs, verbs) used inanyone's speech.

For example, a person with a most highly valued representational system which is visual will describe his experience with predicates whichpresuppose a visual system such as: I see what you are saying, clearly, looking at thiswork will show you how to improve your work, Imagine how this appears to bedull reading.

People whose most highly valued representational system is kinesthetic will use predicates which presuppose kinesthetic representations. For example, I want you firmly to graspthis concept; I feel you can overcome some bard problems; Can you get in touchwith, and geta bandle on, what this means.

A person whose primaryrepresentational system is auditory will use predicates which presupposeauditory representations. For example, he will say, Sounds interesting to me; Iwill talk to you later; I will be hearing from him soon; so in other words wewill all get together and be sounding boards for these ideas.

We also found that those therapists and hypnotists who were most effective in their work had a systematic, though not always conscious, way of utilizing a client's most highly valued representational system. Understanding how a client organizeshis experience in terms of these representational systems has great rewards for both the psychotherapist and the practitioner of hypnosis.

We make a distinction in our formalization of these patterns of behavior between input channels, representational systems, and output channels. A person can hear (input) words, make a picture (representational system), and express it bypounding his fist (output channel). (The formal model of this aspect of behavior is the substance of The Structure of Magic II, which you should read if you wish further study.)

It is enough to say at this point that each of us as human beings creates models of the world which differ from the world. Each of us creates a model of the world which is different from every other person's model of the world. Furthermore, formal models ¡Ý Meta-models ¡Ý can be built which represent the patterns of modeling which are at work when we as humans create these maps. Meta-models can be built which represent the rules, whether conscious or unconscious, governing how therapists and hypnotists work with these modeling principles.

A Brief Note on: Representation

You might have heard of a word presentation. This refers to the act of ¡Èshowing or giving something to somebody.¡É You might also know the word representation, which is a compound word, consisting of a prefix re- and presentation. To represent is ¡Èto show something in a picture, or to describe something using language.¡É Let¡Çs say you have an apple in front of you. If you pick up the apple and give it to someone, you are presenting it. On the other hand, if you sketch the apple or utter the word apple, you are representing it.  Or if you can picture the apple in your head as a mental image, you are also representing it (see the section of representation in Encyclopadia Britannica). Things that exist in the material world, like apples, are stored in us through senses. To represent then is to express those stored items using language, pictures or mental images.
