About the word “Ma”

In Japan, there is a word “Ma”. One of its meanings is “between something and something”, in other words, “interval” in English. Furthermore, this “Ma” is generally divided into two types.

What one type means is intervals in time or in space, in which, like pause in time or gap in space, nothing exists or which has no meanings. Break and blank also represent this meaning plainly.

On the other hand, another type’s “Ma” shows that, although there is actually nothing in space or time, a vast and deep universe is just there. What it expresses is a sense that some elements, including itself, invade empty time and space, making them meaningful.

John Grinder:
You know what happened in thirteenth-century Italy. A lot of things happened in thirteenth-century... (laughter) One of the things that happened in thirteenth-century Italy that I'm interested in is that if you look at thevisual art available before...

Marne:
(interrupting) I'm not real good with timelines and that sort of thing but I think tha's when they discovered depth perception in their paintings.

John Grinder:
Perspective. They found a way, and listento this very carefully, of mechanically distorting the relationships they knew to be true by measuring them in the world in three dimensions onto a two-dimensional surface. The purpose of this mechanical distortion is to fit the distortions in the human visual nervous system in such a way that the end two-dimensional result would appear to be three-dimensional. Mapping from three dimensions onto two dimensions is a good example of how first-attention reduction occurs when first attention tries to appreciate second-attention process. What is it that they did? Did you hear what I said? Both attentions.

I once stood on a small hill in the city of Athens, Philopappus, and looked across a distance at a larger hill, the two main hills in the area, and the second hill was called the Acropolis, and there's one structure from Philopappus that drew my eye as I looked across at the Acropolis. It was the Parthenon, nowlargely a series of columns with a partial roof and a foundation because the Greeks were foolish enough to putmunitions inside of it during one of the wars with the Turks who then blew it up.

When I climbed to the top of the Philopappus and looked across that intervening kilometer or so at the Parthenon... it wasas if my body sang atthat point. There was something so congruent
about my visual experience that see feel circuits in me were triggered. It was as if mybody had found a deep natural song that it could sing that belonged there atthat time. Now the startling thing is that if you now make that journey, if youwalk down off Philopappus and walk over and up to the top of the Acropolis and take a tape measure and begin to measure the distance between the columns and the actual circumference of the columns−their tapering as they move upward (until the guards come alone and throw you out)−as you make those measurements you'll discover, as in the case of thirteenth-century Itaru, the Greeks had a wisdom that somewhere got lost. They distorted the objective reality of the Parthenon in such a way that it fits the visual distortions of the human nervous system.

Judith DeLozier:
Those columns are not the same size nor are the distances between them the same. And yet as you lookat it your body tells you that this objective information is false. There's something so very right about what the Greeks didwith the Parthenon. Those guys had done their epistemological homework.Bateson emphasizes again andagain the importance of thinking cybernetically, that is, chunking in a way that respects the entire circuit, the relationships, and not just arcs of circuits. The way in which we chunk experience can lead to epistemological errors in our thinking that are formidable. Gregory says thatunless we learn to think cybernetically the entire planet could be forfeit.

A mutual resonance Western and Japanese sensibilitiesーCollaboration of classical music and Nohgaku

From the spring of 2020, many events at home and abroad have been canceled due to the spread of COVID-19. Under such circumstances, in May of this year, a well-known pianist from Argentina and living in Switzerland, Martha Argerich, came to Japan for the first time in three years and toured various cities for about a month to perform the world's highest performances.

Among her performances, there was a rare program in which Argerich played together with Bunzō Otsuki, a living national treasure, who is a leading Shite (protagonist) in the Kanze school of Noh. There, Otsuki danced to J.S. Bach's ‘Partita’ Argerich played.

The other day, I found an interview article with Argerich in a newspaper. On the day, after playing with Noh performer, she said with excitement, as following.

“Noh fascinates my mind deeply. The very slow movements and the ‘Ma (time)’ of transformation from one movement to another reminded me of ‘legato’ in music.”

The article included a review on Argerich’s performance itself, too.

“Her flowing tempo was well as usual. In addition, her communication ability that, by taking a little longer ‘Ma (time)’ to connect phrases, synchronized her piano with the movement of Noh dance was very wonderful, accordingly Bach's music and Noh dance showed a mysterious fusion which transcended the actual time and space of performance.”

Here is a mutual resonance of Western and Japanese sensibilities thorough art. I think the essence of communication and its appearance are here.

Yokawa-chūdō-hall of Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple

Yokawa-chūdō-hall, located in the Yokawa area of Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple
*, is famous for its building in Kake-zukuri like ‘Kiyomizu no Butai’ (the stage of Kiyomizu) of Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto. Kake-zukuri is a building style which secures the underfloor using long pillars and crosspieces on the place with a large height difference like a cliff, and constructs a building on it.

By the way, why was this chūdō-hall built in such an unstable place? Such a question arose in me.

Then, I investigated the reason, and found that the model of this building was ‘Kentōshi-sen’ (the ship for envoy to Tang China during Nara and Heian periods). Looking at with such knowledge, to me, the ground with height difference looked like the surface of the sea with high waves going up and down, and at the same time, the building seemed to create a ship-like atmosphere floating in the waves of the sea.
Yokawa-chūdō-hall is just an elaborate metaphor, which makes us feel how courageous it was to go abroad to learn at the risk of life. Given immeasurable encouragement, I left the building.

Note:

*Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple is the head temple of the Tendai sect of Japan located on Mt. Hiei between Kyoto City and Otsu City of Shiga Prefecture, which was opened by Saichō (767-822), a monk in the early Heian period.

Silence is also a word...

バンド

I heard an interesting story from my friend.

He is a Japanese in his fifties and has been a musical director for overseas bands. One day, a small issue came up and he was asked for his opinion as a director.

At that moment, he stopped talking and took the time for a moment to give weight to his words. However, according to him, nobody around him waited for him to begin to talk. On the contrary, they began to talk freely as they like. In Japan, silence and pauses serve as preparations for the next important word. The longer the silence is, the more everyone understand that the next words carry weight. On the other hand, in the West, it is perceived as having nothing to say.

He says that he has a lot of overseas experience and has no problems with music. However, according to him, in everyday life, Westerners do not “read the atmosphere of  the place” or do not think that “silence is also a word''. This is a cultural difference that our Japanese cannot become familiar with, he says.

Silence is also a word...
